Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you live in Uganda? We live in the capital city Kampala, with two million people. The city is industrialized and built up, but about 40 years behind the US. It is congested and the traffic is crazy. The climate is warm year round. There are cars, houses, electricity and water. Most main roads are paved although loaded with potholes, sometimes man-size. We live about 30 minutes from Lake Victoria, the second largest lake (behind Lake Superior) in the world.
What have you been doing in Uganda? Preaching in many churches, ministering in villages, teaching bible classes, training leaders, etc. Our main focus is working with youth and young people, training and developing them into leaders. We train young people between the ages of 20-30 to mentor youth in high schools. The mentors visit their assigned school once a week and teach the students for one hour. In addition to teaching the youth, the mentors develop relationships with them, counseling and guiding them toward their future. Although the curriculum is God centered, the schools are very receptive to our mentorship program. The principles and teachers thoroughly like the curriculum and encourage the students to study and apply the material. We have received numerous testimonies from the school leadership about how the behavior of the students has greatly improved, making their job as administrators easier.
What do you eat? We eat regular things like chicken, hamburger, rice, potatoes and vegetables. We also eat a lot of bananas. Uganda has 62 different kinds of bananas. So, needless to say, the staple food is matooke, which is a type of green banana. The way the locals prepare it is to peel it, wrap it in banana leaves, steam it then smash it. Sort of like mashed potatoes. Then they top it with a peanut sauce, sort of how we put gravy on potatoes.
What are your living conditions like? We live in a house made of concrete and brick with a tin roof, and we have electricity and running water. We have a small yard and Ugandan neighbors all around us.
Do you work with other ministries in Uganda? We do work alongside other ministries and churches in Uganda. The majority of our mentors are recruited from the churches. Also, we minister frequently in the churches, preaching in Sunday services and teaching discipleship classes.
How long will you be in Uganda? We have moved here indefinitely. The Lord has given us a vast vision for Uganda, including the establishment of the mentorship program in schools as well as building a youth center and pioneering a youth service. We will continue serving in Uganda till we see the completion of this task or until God says otherwise.
Will you minister in other countries? Most certainly, God has given us a vision to touch youth not only in Uganda but also in many other countries in Africa.
